[Typhoon Season Building Disaster Prevention] Taiwan High-Strength Steel Selection Guide: Enhancing Wind Pressure Resistance and Corrosion Resistance to Protect Factory and Residential Safety

Taiwan's geographical location is approximately in23.5 degrees North latitude, 121 degrees East longitudeIt is a subtropical country.

When the environment in the Northwest Pacific and the South China Sea is conducive to typhoon formation, typhoons often reach their strongest state when they arrive near Taiwan.

When a typhoon passes through the Central Mountain Range, its center will be damaged by the terrain, and its intensity will begin to weaken, but it will still bring...Heavy rainfallIt can easily cause landslides, which can severely damage bridges, highways and railways.

The majority of Taiwan's population is concentrated in the western half and coastal areas, making it particularly vulnerable to typhoons that make landfall in the western half. For example:

  • Typhoon Sailoma in 1977
  • Typhoon Wayne, 1986
  • Typhoon Sangtoer in 2014
  • Typhoon Danas

These typhoons severely damaged southwestern Taiwan, including Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Chiayi. News footage showed that many factories, houses, tin-roofed buildings, and garage doors were seriously damaged or destroyed.

Common causes of disaster

  • Insufficient structural strengthFor example, if the C-shaped steel is too small, the corrugated plate is too thin, or the high-speed rolling door is too light and easily blown away by strong winds.
  • Corrosion leads to reduced strengthThe foundation and screw holes were severely corroded, which greatly reduced the strength and made it unable to withstand wind pressure when strong winds struck, thus causing it to collapse or be blown away.
  • Building materials flying everywhere cause secondary injuriesWhen strong winds blow off painted building materials and they become scattered debris in the air, they may hit people or vehicles, causing secondary injuries.

Roller door typhoon protection measures

  • Typhoon protection measures for roller shutters: Traditional roller shutters in factories or residences are very likely to be destroyed by strong winds of level 13 or above. The following are some typhoon protection measures for traditional roller shutters to teach you how to use them.
  • Lower the traditional roller door and use C-shaped steel or angle steel. At one-third and two-thirds of the way down the roller door, use C-shaped steel or angle steel to fit horizontally and tightly against the full width of the roller door, and use screws to lock the C-shaped steel or angle steel on both sides, as shown in the picture below.
  • If holes can be drilled on both sides of the bottom of the roller shutter and secured with M16 screws, the windproof effect will be greatly enhanced.

How to select high-strength steel

  • Stainless steel, galvanized steel, and magnesium-aluminum-zinc coated C-shaped steel were selected as building materials.
  • Choose high-strength painted steel sheets, such as 0.5mm thick 304 stainless steel painted steel products, or 0.5mm thick aluminum-zinc painted steel products coated with 55% AZ100 or higher, which have strong corrosion resistance and wind resistance.
  • Factory and residential roller doors are made of 1.0mm~1.5mm thick 304 stainless steel with baked paint or galvanized Z12 or higher with baked paint, which can effectively resist wind and corrosion.

"Rolling up the door makes it safe, lowering it gives you peace of mind; rolling doors are great, everything about them is great!"
